Common questions

Rotations, explained straight

What is a volleyball rotation?

Every time your team wins the serve back, all six players rotate one position clockwise. Each of the six rotations has its own legal starting spots, and where you stand at the moment of serve is governed by the overlap rules. VolleyVision animates all six rotations so you can see your spot instead of memorizing a diagram.

What's the difference between the 5-1, 6-2, and 4-2?

It comes down to who sets. In a 5-1, one setter runs the offense from every rotation. In a 6-2, two setters take turns — whoever is in the back row sets, so there are always three front-row attackers. In a 4-2, two setters take turns the opposite way — whoever is in the front row sets, which makes it the simplest system to learn.

What are the overlap rules?

At the moment the server contacts the ball, each back-row player must be behind their front-row counterpart, and within a row the left player must be left of the middle, and the middle left of the right. The instant the ball is served, everyone can move anywhere. VolleyVision flags illegal overlaps the same way a referee would, using USAV/NFHS rules.

Can I learn rotations without a team or a coach?

Yes. An individual account is $15 a year and gets you the same trainer coaches use with their teams: every rotation of the 5-1, 6-2, and 4-2, phase-by-phase walkthroughs, practice questions, and CoachBot for rules questions.
