The instant the server contacts the ball, players can move anywhere on their side of the court — that's why the setter can release to target.
Each back-row player must keep at least one foot closer to the endline than the matching front-row player at the moment the server strikes the ball.
Within a row, the left player must keep a foot closer to their sideline than the middle, and the middle closer than the right player.
